Still more lazy thoughts from this one…

Reprise » A Meme of 15 (Directors)

John Carpenter

John Carpenter

About five years ago, my friend J.D. — he of the wonderful RADIATOR HEAVEN blog — wrote about a particular meme that had arisen in the ether back then. Since it shows up, or like it, fairly regularly in the blogosphere, I thought it still was applicable. So, I’ll reprise my response from awhile ago here:

“This 15 Directors meme originally started on Facebook and has now found a life of its own in the blogosphere.”

There were impressive meme results five years ago, which you can scan here.

J.D. put together one pretty fantastic list in his 15 Directors Meme post, which sadly no longer exists online. Wish it did as this blogger never fails to inspire. Still, I did partake, natch. We shared some directors in our own lists, including the one headlining this post. No surprise that this blogger had an extraordinarily successful John Carpenter Week blogathon of his back in 2010.

Here then were the simple rules for anyone who’d like to join in:

  • List off the first 15 directors that come to your head that have shaped the way you look at movies. You know, the ones that will always stick with you.
  • Don’t take too long to think about it.

The rest of my list came pretty quickly into my head (and in no particular order I might add):

Obviously, I need to look more at Anurag Kashyap’s work. Thanks so much for contributing to the stream of great filmmakers, Vipul. Much appreciated.

It’s always a pleasure. And regarding Mr. Kashyap, I’d strongly suggest movies like shaitan, udaan and dev d. All these three are must watch movies according to me.

Glad I got to be the first to sing the praises of PT Anderson (although don’t get me started on “Inherent Vice”!). Boogie NIghts is still one of my all-time favorites. And Kubrick? We’re not worthy! 😉

You named 3 of mine: Howard Hawks, Steven Spielberg, and Hitchcock. The director whose name shows up most frequently among movies I own is Michael Curtiz. I think I have about 30 of his films, and if you run down his imdb credits, you can see why. Others are Frank Capra, George Cukor, Richard Lester, John Huston, Stanley Donen, John Ford, Sydney Pollack, and Ron Howard. That’s only 12 or so, but after that I had to start thinking too hard about it.

Oh, yes. Michael Curtiz is more than worthy. So many of his are faves of mine, too. Great to see Stanley Donen there, as well. Another great contribution, Naomi! Many thanks.
