Stuff Running ‘Round My Head: 95 More Songs of Summer – “Classical Gas”.
My Northern California colleague, Jeff Vaca, is at it once again on his Stuff Running ‘Round My Head blog with another stellar set of songs from years past in his 95 More Songs of Summer series. Today, highlighting one of my all-time favorite pop instrumentals from 1968, Classical Gas:
“When I was 8 years old, I didn’t think it was possible to get any cooler than this song, and can even remember watching The Smothers Brothers on occasion. It was years before I learned that Williams was also a writer for the show.”
Doesn’t get any better than this for us old guys ;-). Check out this and his whole series here. No doubt, you’ll find something that draws you back.
Note: Jeff shared the 20th anniversary video clip for the Mason Williams song in his post. I lean toward the original broadcast from the Smothers Brothers show, primarily because of its marvelously and darkly lit opening. One that blossomed to reveal the entire orchestra backing him up. Enjoy.

Good choice on the clip. The dramatic pull back and change in lighting add some pizzazz to the performance. So does the puffy shirt and colonial jacket.
