A Song For This Day (and year): Will the Wolf Survive
Another year is over and upon us, and like I’ve done before (alright, it’s a habit), I’m highlighting a song that just felt right at this point in time. And given my general lack of attention to Ye Ol’ Blog and the tumult that’s going around us, I certainly wasn’t going to neglect this annual post before time ran out. Oh, and if we’re being honest, the year that just finished was as bad as I expected. Given our political climate, it is now par for the course, sadly, but I ain’t quitting the fight.
Thus, to christen 2026 went back to L.A.’s last Olympic year1 and selected a tune when things were somewhat calmer but still changing. Especially in pop culture, with technology, Reagan2, major political events like Indira Gandhi’s assassination, the Soviet boycott of the Olympics, and other cultural touchstones. All while many recalled George Orwell’s dystopian novel “1984”, which offered a chilling backdrop to real-world concerns about surveillance. Sound familiar?
That said, it seemed more than appropriate to select Los Lobos‘ Will the Wolf Survive from their second album3to get the new epoch going. Allmusic’s Matthew Greenwald may have described it best:
“The title track for their debut album, Will the Wolf Survive?, this song, in just four minutes, paid off all bets that were placed on Los Lobos as one of the finest and innovative bands to emerge in the 1980s. A powerful, chiming folk-rock groove is placed against a strong undercurrent of Latin/bossa nova rhythms, creating a shimmering and unifying effect.”
Written by Los Lobos members Louie Perez and David Hidalgo, and produced by T Bone Burnett, “The title for this song and album was derived from an issue of National Geographic, which contained an article headed: “Where Can the Wolf Survive?”, Songfacts noted. “Drummer and songwriter, Louie Perez, told Rolling Stone this headline resonated with Los Lobos, who had struggled for success in the US, having come from Mexican roots.”:
“It was like our group, our story: What is this beast, this animal that the record companies can’t figure out? Will we be given the opportunity to make it or not?”
The single4 is a parable of both a noble animal and a dignified man from another time surviving in a cold, modern world. And a showcase for Los Lobos’ musical traits of rock & roll, combining Tex-Mex, country, zydeco, R&B, and brown-eyed soul. With traditional music such as cumbia, boleros, and norteños thown in. “We [Mexican-Americans] saw the importance of preserving our culture, and of passing along the traditions of our fathers,” Perez explained to American Songwriter.
“So it’s all of that wrapped up into one song. But it’s about America … I always thought of myself as an American kid. I grew up on Carl Reiner sitcoms. It all becomes kind of intuitive. Stuff bubbles to the top when the time calls for it. All of it is instilled into that one song.” Its overall theme is about trying to sustain the things worth keeping and mean something worth fighting for5. What we’re seeing being played out across the country of those who live and reside here right now.
And as always, I sincerely hope the new year is a happy one, or at least better, for us all.
Through the chill of winter Running across a frozen lake Hunters hard on his trail All odds are against him With a family to provide for But one thing he must keep alive Will the wolf survive? Drifting by the roadside Climbs a strong and aging face Wants to make some honest pay Losing to the rainstorm He's got two strong legs to guide him Two strong arms keep him alive Will the wolf survive? Standing in the pouring rain All alone in a world that's changed Running scared now forced to hide In a land where he once stood with pride But he'll find his way by the morning light Sounds across the nation Coming from your hearts and minds Battered drums and old guitars Singing songs of passion It's the truth that they all look for Something they must keep alive Will the wolf survive? Will the wolf survive?
