Friday Song – Kathleen Edwards’ Change the Sheets
My children will undoubtedly tell you, it’s a rare thing for a contemporary song to gather their old man in. Hardly recognizing any new music or performer by ear emanating its way from the car radio, or the late-’70s Pioneer receiver I reclaimed last year, as I once did. Stuck in the ways of my development, stunted a decade or two back seemingly. Comes with age, I reckon. Only listening to the familiar more often than not.
Then, life in all her wisdom will throw a left and knock me back.
Alright, the song came out back in January 2012. So?
One of those infrequent moments came last year at a movie screening at The Landmark West L.A. Granted, the songs management pipes in for those waiting in their seats for the start of showtime only occasionally rouse my curiosity. Kathleen Edwards certainly did. Thank heaven for the Pandora app to tell me her song, Change the Sheets, was what transfixed me. Scurrying to download to my phone before the trailers started.
Sure my kids would tell me, “No one does that anymore, dad.”
Perhaps the song and artist new to me fit some ancient analog algorithm in this head of mine. The song’s simple yet catchy intro certainly engaged it. The backbeat, deft guitar work by Gord Tough, Jim Bryson, Justin Vernon, including the singer-songwriter Kathleen, that bridging and those vocals haunting Edwards yearning lyrics. Damn. Overplayed it the rest of the day and would return to it every so often to do again.
Maybe I’ll tell my children it’s not so new, having those selfsame qualities that have always drawn this listener, since childhood.
My love took a ride on a red-eye plane Going home And we're never going to feel the same Change this feeling under my feet Change the sheets and then change me My love is a stockpile of broken wills Like Santa Fe, margaritas and sleeping pills I want to lie in the cracks of this lonely road I can fill in the blanks every time you don't phone Here is the truth, I swear it used to be fun Go ahead run, run, run, run Change this feeling under my feet Change the sheets and then change me Won't you change this feeling under my feet I want to lie in the cracks of this lonely road I can fill in the blanks every time you don't phone Here is the truth, I swear it was fun Go ahead run, run, run, run, run, run, run Change this feeling under my feet Would you change the sheets and then change me Change this feeling under my feet 'Cause here is the truth, I swear it was fun Go ahead run, run, run, run, run, run, ooh Go ahead run, run, run, run, run, run, ooh
