Still more lazy thoughts from this one…

Labor Day Special: Beatles Mixtape for Joe

The-Beatles-a-hard-days-night

Yesterday, friend and author Joe Maddrey over at his blog, Movies Made Me, noted this in his enjoyably contemplative Music Made Me #1: Nirvana vs. Pearl Jam post:

“About a month ago, my friend Rob and I started scheming an experiment.  It started with a casual facebook post: “Does anybody still make mix tapes?”  This prompted some passionate responses from friends who grew up practicing the art of the mix tape.  We quickly followed up with another question: “Nirvana or Pearl Jam?”  For those of us who came of age in the late 80s / early 90s, this was an important question – although probably not as unavoidable as the Beatles vs. Stones debate of our parents’ generation.”

Now, I’m of an age where this argument had a lot of bearing in my opinion of music, the 60s, and what I’d do during my evenings the next decade over. Specifically, after the compact cassette was invented, which also was known by many of us as the Musicassette (MC). After I could afford to purchase component audio equipment, that is. Of course, after A Hard Day’s Night, I’d forever be on The Lads side of such a face-off. Not to denigrate The Stones, it just is. In follow-up yesterday, Joe contacted me on Facebook to request an all-Beatles mix tape tracklist from moi.

I was honored he’d ask me. Or figuring my rumination on the subject over the years would pique my interest. Sure did. Started the last day of August and couldn’t wait to get up on Labor Day to finish it. His friend Ben will provide Joe with one by Mick and company, and he will post the final playlists on his blog. I very much look forward to that. So, here would be mine. No limit was placed on me by the author for the endeavor, but since Rolling Stone Magazine of late seems to be concentrating on 100 lists, that would be the number I’d hold in check.

Besides, it is way too easy to exceed for this Beatlemaniac. 😉 I’ve broken this up in a pair of 50s — just imagine this as a four and half hour mixtape cassette. Play the first half before going to bed. Sleep on it, and turn it over in the morning.

This is a great list that includes all my faves, with the possible exception of “Cayenne.” You may know better than I, was that a Quarrymen track?

That’s quite a long mixtape it seems, but a very good one. I used to love making mixtapes, but no one ever gave me any feedback or discussion about the tapes I made for them so I stopped making them. And it did take a lot of time that I didn’t have. I made a lot of mixtapes for myself as well and used to enjoy them when I was driving on a long trip. No cassette player now so nevermind. Do many people even have cassette players anymore? Let alone listen to them?

Thank you kindly, Arlee. I was kinda shocked to discover the variety of mixtape sites out there that people now contribute to and get feedback from. All kinds of music, for all kinds of purposes. This art is far from dead! Yay!

I still have a cassette player. Well, a combo CD/Cassette/USB TEAC deck that can digitally convert audio tape to MP3. Handy when it comes to digitizing old audiobook cassettes that never got a CD upgrade.
