Still more lazy thoughts from this one…

TMT: It’s Just Different Here

This is the next entry in a Theatre… a Movie… and a Time, a series that was begun here. As I’ve already noted, these remembrances should not and will not be limited to the distant past. I have little to do with it because sometimes circumstances, ones I have no control over whatsoever, assert themselves. I’m only around for the ride — that, and to take note them. It is why yesterday’s jaunt stood out.

“I love you but you have no idea what you are talking about.”

The Landmark in Los Angeles:

Movie

Time

July 1, 2012: after introducing this George Roy Hill film to our children on the last day of June the night before (which they loved, btw), I thought to invite my teen and almost-teen to the film I wanted to see the morning next. For some reason they asked who directed Moonrise Kingdom. “The same guy who did Fantastic Mr. Fox.”, I responded. A clear favorite of ours. “Oh“, they said, “Okay.”

Since I wanted to be back by around noon (I mean, with Tiger contenting at his golf tournament, the golfer in me demanded I return home early to catch it), we headed to The Landmark in West L.A. for no other reason than their 10:15 AM showtime. It wasn’t lost on either of my youngsters that this was the exact same theater where we, as a trio, first saw Wes Anderson’s 2009 film. Synchronicity raising its head yet again.

Watching the film (another great one by the filmmaker), and, more importantly, feeling how much both of my children enjoyed the experience, was very much worth bringing along the tandem. That they both clapped as the movie’s end credits splashed, actually leading the others in the movie hall that Sunday morning, made it so. All they talked about was the movie as we left the stadium.

Of course, we’re well aware that we live in LaLa Land. That’s needless to say when my daughter spots this cable personality at the concession stand on the way out, and her brother observes that one of these svelte little numbers parked right next to us in the lot (note the vanity plate):

You can’t make this stuff up, folks. Especially, when a song on the car radio, by sheer chance the one below, matched this movie moment as it serenaded us home. Given the darkness a city like this one can log, noting its beguiling light shouldn’t be missed when it happens:

Great story, Michael! It’s awesome to hear that you were able to share this experience with your two children, and even better that they loved the movie!
