Richard Pryor Live on the Sunset Strip at 30
Every so often, I contribute celebratory articles over at my blogging colleague’s site, Edward Copeland on Film… and More. And with his best concert film, Richard Pryor Live on the Sunset Strip, reaching its 30th anniversary today, I had a few words to say about it:
“Most of the time they, the funny men and women, riff off of other comics that have come before them, just with updated material. A few, though, will bring something fresh when most do not. Yet, there have been a very small number of humorists who’ve proven to be both revolutionary and evolutionary with what they brought while standing alone on the stage facing out. Unquestionably, Richard Pryor was one of them.”

Y’know I’ve never seen a live comedy show before, I really don’t know if I’d like it or not to be honest. Is it bad of me to say I’ve only seen Pryor in Superman 3 [sheepish smile]

Well, not all live comedy shows are the same. It depends upon the comedian and her/his act. Only seen Richard Pryor in ‘Superman 3’? He did have a varied film career. I’d recommend checking out the murder/romance/mystery ‘Silver Streak’, his first pairing with Gene Wilder. He’s great in that supporting role. Thanks, Ruth.

I cannot believe my dad let me and my brothers when we were young – just wrong, funny but wrong. My dad also had us watch Bill Cosby. I guess that is what is called ‘balance.’ 🙂

That certainly is something, Iba. I don’t think I’d have gotten away with seeing this at a young age byway of my parents. Still, a great way to balance things with Bill Cosby ;-). Thanks so much for the comment.
