I’m Not Missing A Summer Movie Quiz by Dennis — No Matter How Late
Blogger, noted New Beverly Cinema and drive-in movie supporter, and genuinely real good guy (along with being a good friend), Dennis Cozzalio is one who focuses his followers on what’s important. Not the mundane aspects of everyday life, but the truly consequential that leads many of us to pore over details of the monumental and crucial that has eaten up many, many hours. In the dark…with loads of strangers sitting beside us, in the cathedral of cinema.
And how has he done this, you ask? Besides his deft writing on subjects that range far and wide on the movies that have captivated us, he has periodically tested his minions and disciples over on this wonderfully titled Sergio Leone and the Infield Fly Rule site. His semi-regular movie quizzes are online events that many look forward to, me included, and he’s done them now going on for an unbelievable ten years1. Quite a feat, if I do say so myself.
…shamefully hangs head low.
And I still somehow missed this year’s summer movie quiz, which came out at the end of April, for chissakes!
Even if my good friend Dennis posted his “correct” answers a month ago, I’m not letting this go without a response. As I’ve stated more than once, I treat these as interview questions. Anyone interested in film is invited to take part. Paste the questions and craft your answers into Google’s sometime temperamental Blogger comment system in the linked post below, or put your answers on your own blog (if you have one) and leave a comment on his quiz article with a link back to your answers.
As Dennis said…
“And who better to end this particular drought than that tall, cool drink of water from the bad side of the tracks, the one teacher on the staff guaranteed to make the class sit up straight, if only to make driving her stiletto heel through the top of the distracted student’s foot just that much easier? Yes, we welcome SLIFR U’s favorite substitute professor, low on positive teaching philosophy but high on shitty attitude, the Bad Teacher herself, Ms. Elizabeth Halsey, to introduce SLIFR movie quiz #24, her very own Rotten Apple, Hot for Teacher Summer Movie Quiz.”
MS. ELIZABETH HALSEY’S ROTTEN APPLE, HOT FOR (BAD) TEACHER SUMMER MOVIE QUIZ
1) Name a line from a movie that should’ve become a catch phrase but didn’t*
Reciting the supremely cynical, ever-quotable, but friend-loyal Lt. Nick Frecia (and another wonderful role, in a stable filled with them, by Kurt Russell) from the under-appreciated Robert Towne film, Tequila Sunrise:
“How the f*ck did this guy get dead?!?”
2) Your second favorite William Wellman film
The Ox-Bow Incident would be my #1.
3) Viggo Mortensen or Javier Bardem?
As usual, Dennis forces a pick between two actors I really enjoy watching in whatever they do. Damnit! Well, if I have to…it’s…
4) Favorite first line from a movie
“Now I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.” ~ Patton
5) The most disappointing/superfluous “director’s cut” or otherwise extended edition of a movie you’ve seen?*
6) What is the movie you feel was most enhanced by a variant version?*
No question, and with no hesitation, it’s…
7) Eve Arden or Una Merkel?
8) What was the last DVD/Blu-ray/streaming film you saw? The last theatrical screening?
DVD – Hulk vs. Wolverine
Blu-ray – Days of Future Past (Rogue Cut)
Streaming – The Peacemaker
Theatrical – Mission: IMPOSSIBLE – Rogue Nation
9) Second favorite Michael Mann film
Naturally, if you get the name of this blog, Heat remains my all-time favorite of his.
10) Name a favorite director’s most egregious misstep
Not even close, has to be William Friedkin’s…
11) Alain Delon or Marcello Mastroianni?
12) Jean-Luc Godard famously stated that “all you need for a movie is a girl and a gun.” Name one other essential element that you’d add to the mix.
A camera.
13) Favorite one-sheet that you own, or just your favorite one-sheet (please provide a link to an image if you can)
14) Catherine Spaak or Daniela Giordano?
I’ll go with my usual…Linda Darnell, for the block.
15) Director who most readily makes you think “Whatever happened to…?”
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow‘s Kerry Conran, recently answered here.
16) Now that some time has passed… The Interview, yes or no?
Grudgingly, yes.
17) Second favorite Alberto Calvalcanti film
I’ve got nothing, Dennis.
18) Though both displayed strong documentary influence in their early films, Wim Wenders and Werner Herzog have focused heavily on the documentary form late in their filmmaking careers. If he had lived, what kind of films do you think Rainer Werner Fassbinder, their partner in the German New Wave of the ‘70s, would be making now?
The Interview.
19) Name a DVD you’ve replaced with a Blu-ray. Name another that you decided not to replace.*
Proud to own a brand spanking new Miracle Mile in high-def. I’m more than happy with my standard definition copy of Fritz Lang‘s The Big Heat, though.
20) Don Rickles or Rodney Dangerfield?
And I just re-watched last Spring what turned out to be his debut feature film, Run Silent Run Deep. At the very least as funny as Rodney Dangerfield, but far superior as an actor. Mr. Warmth himself…
21) Director who you wish would hurry up and make another film
No question it’s Alfonso Cuarón.
22) Second favorite Michael Bay film
Armageddon is second to The Rock; add in the ridiculous The Island and the first Transformers and you have the only films of his I can stand.
23) Name a movie that, for whatever reason, you think of as your own
24) Your favorite movie AI (however loosely you care to define the term)
25) Your favorite existing DVD commentary track*
It’s also an all-time favorite film of mine, too. John Carpenter’s and Kurt Russell’s hilarious and yet informative commentary, which along with the stories that came out of this production, really is the stuff of legend.
26) The double bill you’d program on the last night of your own revival theater
I’ve mentioned them already on this post. The above film and this…
27) Catherine Deneuve or Claudia Cardinale?
Dennis, I know you had a French vs. Italian theme going here, but like you, there’s only one answer to this:
(* Questions provided by long-time SLIFR reader and quiz participant Robert Fiore. Thanks, Bob!)
- As special bonus extra credit, to commemorate 10 years of movie quiz-taking fun, Dennis’ latest contains “…a compulsively clickable look back at the 23 quizzes that preceded this one — A COMPLETIST’S GUIDE TO 10 YEARS OF THE SERGIO LEONE AND THE INFIELD FLY RULE QUIZZES.” ↩

This is a great quiz! Love your answers. Especially Aliens. 🙂 And Collateral was a really good film – it doesn’t seem to get much attention…

Oh, thank you, my friend. These are always a lot of fun to do. 🙂

They are a lot of fun to do. I’ve got back a couple of times on some to catch up and offer answers. Still have some I’ve not done. Should rectify that. 😉
Thank you very much and I appreciate the comments you’ve made so far. 😀

Great answers chum – and I believe I would definitely share some of these too. But is it bad that I don’t know who Daniela Giordano is?

Thank you very much, Sergio. And no, it’s not bad to not recognize Daniela — I sure didn’t. 😉

Michael, that was a fun quiz. Number 18 stumped me. Why isn’t Tequila Sunrise talked about more? I love your quote that should have been a contender. 🙂

Same here. 😉 We will keep pushing for more recognition for “Tequila Sunrise”! We fans must stick together. 🙂
Thanks, Cindy!

Catherine Deneuve or Claudia Cardinale?
Ouch! That choice makes my brain hurt.

Yeah, but we remain loyal to Doña Grant (The Professionals, 1966) 😉
Thanks so much, Paul. 🙂

Hi, Michael and Dennis:
Tough quiz!
#1: “Are my eyes really brown?” Rick Blaime (Bogart) to Major Strasser (Conrad Veidt) and Captain Renault (Claude Raines) in ‘Casablanca’.
#2: Toss up between ‘Battleground’ and ‘The Story of G.I. Joe’.
#4: “What was that?”: Opening line of ‘Serenity’.
#5: Any of the interim spate of cluttered up and “reimagined” editions of the ‘Star Wars’ franchise, Chapters IV through VI.
#7: Eve Arden. For her dry, wry humor and quips.
#9: ‘Heat’. With ‘Thief’ at Number One. And his debut, made for ABC TV, ‘The Jericho Mile’ close behind.
#10: Can’t argue with ‘Deal of the Century’.
#11: Money… Lots of money.
#15: Jonathan Liebsman. After ‘The Killing Room’ and ‘Battle: Los Angeles;, Both showing promise and the ability to adapt. He directs ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’???!
#20: Don Rickles. Because he brought life to the characters he played. Exceptionally good as a slimy, blackmailing Carny Barker in ‘X-The Man with the X-Ray Eyes’. And his brief role in ‘Casino’.
#23: Can’t argue with ‘All That Jazz’. A well executed, prescient and sadly overlooked gem!
#24: The “Colossus” super computer in ‘Colossus: The Forbin Project’, The great grandfather of ‘Sky Net’.
#25: The Ladies in Attendance of ‘Firefly’ commenting on its ‘Shindig’ episode. Interesting insights into the costuming, set design and other tricks employed throughout.
#26: ‘Deep Cover’ and ‘Bad Company’. For their story lines, execution and Lawrence Fishburne in his prime “Bad ass” era.
#27: Yes!

More great answers, Kevin (and I’ve submitted them to Dennis). Ah, “Colossus”. Love “The Forbin Project”…one of the most underrated sci-fi films. Glad we agree on “All That Jazz”. Many thanks, my friend. 🙂

Awesome answers Michael! Well we share our love for Michael Mann, I think my second fave might be The Insider after HEAT 😀
Alain Delon is the epitome of cool, perhaps the first French actor who I consider drop dead gorgeous, you can cut glass on those cheekbones. Love Don Rickles too, he was recently on Jimmy Fallon and he had me in stitches!

Love “The Insider” as well. So many great films by Michael Mann. Yeah, Delon was certainly that. Missed that Mr. Warmth was on Jimmy Fallon. He’s going to be playing at the Saban Theatre in a few months, which is just a few blocks down the streets from my work. Many thanks, Ruth! 🙂

1) Name a line from a movie that should’ve become a catch phrase but didn’t *
You don’t have a cousin Paddy. (Throw mama from the train)
2) Your second favorite William Wellman film
I watch a lot of older movies and I recognize Wellman’s name, but I can’t match any movies to it.
3) Viggo Mortensen or Javier Bardem?
Bardem. Blond’s don’t have more fun.
4) Favorite first line from a movie
After all I’m an asshole. Micheal in Brethless
5) The most disappointing/superfluous “director’s cut” or otherwise extended edition of a movie you’ve seen? *
Blade Runner
6) What is the movie you feel was most enhanced by a variant version? *
The Big Sleep
7) Eve Arden or Una Merkel?
Eve Arden
8) What was the last DVD/Blu-ray/streaming film you saw? The last theatrical screening?
Never watched a movie on Blu-ray
9) Second favorite Michael Mann film
The Insider
10) Name a favorite director’s most egregious misstep
I loved the Deer Hunter, and in many ways, I think it is a great movie, but when Michael walked through the airport after returning home from Vietnam in dress uniform and a full beard, I
wanted to barf. While sailors are allowed to wear beards, soldiers absolutely are not, not even on the battle field, especially not an excellent soldier. I just couldn’t fathom why Camino
would run a great movie with such a stupidly out of place detail. As an Army Brat, and knowing my father, at that point he might well have walked out of the film.
11) Alain Delon or Marcello Mastroianni?
Mastroianni La Dolche Vita
12) Jean-Luc Godard famously stated that “all you need for a movie is a girl and a gun.” Name one other essential element that you’d add to the mix.
Great dialogue
13) Favorite one-sheet that you own, or just your favorite one-sheet (please provide a link to an image if you can)
The poster from Wurthring Heights that started Timothy Dalton in the mid-1970’s
14) Catherine Spaak or Daniela Giordano?
Who are they?
15) Director who most readily makes you think “Whatever happened to…?”
Peter Bagdonovic
16) Now that some time has passed… The Interview, yes or no?
Yes. It had its moments
17) Second favorite Alberto Calvalcanti film
Are his films really worth seeking out? I have never heard of him.
18) Though both displayed strong documentary influence in their early films, Wim Wenders and Werner Herzog have focused heavily on the documentary form late in their filmmaking careers. If he had lived, what kind of films do you think Rainer Werner Fassbinder, their partner in the German New Wave of the ’70s, would be making now?
I watched a lot of films by these three directors in the late 70-80s. Fassbender was my favorite. I never noticed the documentary influence in any of their films. Fassbender would still be making films about dealing with dark hearts and little hope.
19) Name a DVD you’ve replaced with a Blu-ray. Name another that you decided not to replace. *
I have never seen a movie on Blu-ray.
20) Don Rickles or Rodney Dangerfield?
When I was 21 and working as a Biochemist’s secretary, a grad student, Ricky Rickles, came into my small office and told me a joke each morning. For all those jokes, I’ll have to choose his uncle Don Rickles
21) Director who you wish would hurry up and make another film
Neil Jorden
22) Second favorite Michael Bay film?
I don’t know. I must have fallen asleep during them if I ever watched one. Does he make good films?
23) Name a movie that, for whatever reason, you think of as your own
The Third Man
24) Your favorite movie AI
Hal
25) Your favorite existing DVD commentary track *
I have never listened to one
26) The double bill you’d program on the last night of your own revival theater
A Touch of Evil and The Third Man
27) Catherine Deneuve or Claudia Cardinale?
Deneuve. People used to tell me that I looked like her, although I had flaming red hair. Go figure.
