James Garner, April 7, 1928 – July 19, 2014
From Maverick to Rockford, his hilarious Dr. Gerald Boyer to the serious Dr. Joe Cardin, ranging easily from Wyatt Earp to Philip Marlowe to Hendley ‘The Scrounger’ in The Great Escape, James Garner was versatility and talent personified. A hard-working class act if there ever was one, and I’m going to miss him greatly.

This is a tough one…I knew him my whole life. Not really, but you get what I’m saying. Though THE GREAT ESCAPE was the first thing I thought of, I also spent many many hours as a child watching Rockford Files with my late mother.

We look at this lost similarly, Paula. This actor was always in something I watched first-hand, or in repeat viewings. Always enjoyed his performances, on TV or film. Great range, versatile, personable. He will be sorely missed. Many thanks, my friend.

I still remember an episode of ‘Maverick’ where Bret was searched for pistols by a sheriff and his deputy during a card game. A slow procession of handguns, from a Colt Single Action to a final derringer was discovered. All so Bret could be arrested and locked up. To help his brother, Bart escape.
Also loved his soliloquy to Julie Andrews about the UK’s and America’s history of war and politics in ‘The Americanization of Emily’. Also, a great foil for James Coburn in that film.
An excellently laid back Marlowe, as well!

Such a great show, and one that redefined a TV genre. Much like Rockford would do a couple decades later. And yes, that soliloquy to Julie Andrews about the UK’s and America’s history of war and politics in ‘The Americanization of Emily’ was fantastic. Saw it again last Sunday in his honor. Never loses its appeal, no matter how many times I’ve seen it. Love his Marlowe — the only character who figured out how to best Bruce Lee onscreen 😉

RIP Mr. Garner. Sadly I’ve only seen him in The Notebook but I REALLY like his performance there, more so than Gosling’s actually. I should check out his other works.
