Reader Results: The Ten Greatest Science Fiction Films of the 1970s.
My friend and author John Kenneth Muir tallied the results of his latest Reader Top Ten poll, the Ten Greatest Science Fiction Films of the 1970s, and once more they are an impressive lot.
“So, as you can see, darkness and light battled it out right until the end in the 1970s, didn’t they? We had new hope and alien terror going hand-in-hand into the 1980s.
It’s also intriguing to note that both Robert Wise and George Lucas made it onto the list for two films apiece. And Michael Crichton material was at the heart of both Westworld and The Andromeda Strain.
Above ten and eleven, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes and Mad Max would have tied at twelfth and thirteenth. Colossus: The Forbin Project and Rollerball were tied for fourteenth and fifteenth.”
I’m thoroughly thrilled with this round-up, as it made for quite a tensome. It’d make for a marvelous film marathon. Absolutely represents the genre and era. And no, it’s not because my top four in my list matched up exactly with those tabulated…well, maybe a little. I know those who weren’t thrilled with the first Star Trek film may find it unbalanced, but personally I’m thrilled. Check out what John has to say for each film that made the reader’s top ten.

Let’s not ignore the best SF film of the decade, Tarkovsky’s
Solaris”, and the most intriguing, Walon Green’s “The Hellstrom Chronicle” which predated the interesting “Phase IV” by three years, and which stymied Hollywood to where they actually awarded a fictionally structured SF film an Oscar for Best Documentary. (Shades of “The War Game”!)

Great to have you chime in on this, Chandler. JKM did list Solaris in his personal picks, and I will be watching it for the first time before the year is out. I’ve heard of, but haven’t seen, The Hellstrom Chronicle. Since you recommend it highly, that’s going into my Netflix, as well. Many thanks. 🙂

That was an very impressive list, I cannot believe I totally forgot about Close Encounters! One of my favorites. The tie for first was perfect as both movies have had almost equal influence on their respective genres.
