Reblogged: Ask JKM a Question: Top Ten Science Fiction Films of All Time?
I consider author John Kenneth Muir a good friend, even if we haven’t (as yet) met in person. I hope that happens some day. So, when he answered one of those questions on his blog come Memorial Day, the type that always generates curiosity and reaction, especially among the fans of a particular film genre many hold dear, well I had to draw attention it.
“The science fiction genre is vast, and it features everything from visions of Dystopia (like ZPG [1972]) to post-apocalyptic worlds (like Planet of the Apes), to adventures set on other worlds, like the Star Trek or Star Wars films.
I’m certain I’ve already forgotten at least one important or historically-necessary title, but if I had to compile a top ten list right now, it would likely look like…”
I won’t spoil it for you or him, but I do recommend reading his Top Ten Science-Fiction Films of All Time list. To whet your appetite, here would be his honorable mentions:

Very interesting stuff there though that is a very broad view of what constitutes SF (also some dodgy dates: THINGS TO COME is from 1936 and ON THE BEACH from 1959). My main gripe, if we take this as a near top 20 in toto, would be the inclusion of three ALIEN films and three STAR WARS films, which seems a bit much. MOON is certainly one I would want to include

Great list from last year! Funny how certain titles fall into everyone’s list. Must be classics! 😀 The great thing about reading everyone else’s list is that D’OH moment when you see a title you had forgotten.

Great choices all around!
‘Things to Come’ and ‘Metropolis’ are classics, no matter what their age. If not for the futuristic ideas. Then for the superb model, set and building designs. And just plain cool looking stuff to revel in!
While Hawks’ ‘The Thing From Another World’ still holds up as a prime example of 1950s ‘Red Scare’ Sci-Fi.
I still think Peter Hyams’ ‘2010’ woks extremely well as a detente flavored sequel to Kubrick’s ‘2001’.

I’m also a fan of Peter Hyams’ ‘2010’, Kevin. Roy Scheider, Helen Mirren and crew did more than solid work in the sequel to Kubrick’s SF classic. As usual, a great comment. Many thanks :-).
