X Songs for X People
I’ve followed one Patricia (Patti) Abbott on the web through her blog for more than a couple of years now. The Detroit-based Patti also hangs out with the readers and writers of crime fiction over at CrimeSpace. I was lucky to finally meet her in person at last year’s Bouchercon. She is a fine writer and editor (and happens to be the mother to novelist Megan Abbott). Her site routinely looks at the popular arts (books, movies, stage plays, and music) with her followers. She thoughtfully queries her readers, and to my knowledge has never created an internet meme in her life.
But last weekend, she offered up something that could work as one:
So, as I’m about to step away for the Thanksgiving holiday (along with being a bit cheeky), I’ll offer it on her behalf ;-). As she explained,
“Lots of songs remind me of the people in my life. But if I had to chose one for each of them, these are my choices. These might not be the song they associate with themselves, but they are songs I do. What songs do you associate with people in your life.”
As the title to this post hints, just solve for ‘X’, if you’re interested. Be it one, two or six, whatever the number of important people in your life come up with a relevant song for each. Embed them, if YouTube or another streaming site has it, into your own blog piece. In my case, like Patti, that number is three.
Fits my son to a tee.
My daughter scares me.
The reason I have those two all comes back to the woman I married. And though I discovered this song before we met, it happened to be playing at her place when I was first invited there.

Interesting, intriguing concept and post!
I grew up in the 1960s. So The Left Banke’s ‘Walk Away Renee’ covers most unrequited loves and the girls who got away.
While Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘I Am A Rock’ was pretty much self descriptive throughout my misspent youth.
And Bob Dylan’s ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues’ perfectly describes the long haired hippie wannnabe radical teens of my youth. Who have grown up to be whiny, consistently angry liberals today.
Honorable Mention to The Dave Brubeck Quartet’s ‘Take Five’. Which plays in a low, constant loop while I write guest post reviews, poetry and haikus.
Great choice of ‘The Mighty Quinn’, Michael. Manfred Mann’s far superior take on Dylan’s lesser known original.

It’s interesting how a song has different associations for different people, for me “The Lady Wants To Know” evokes that first really good spring day.
