Still more lazy thoughts from this one…

35 in One Place

The number

… follows 34 and precedes 36.

… is XXXV in Roman numeral.

… is the highest number one can count to on one’s fingers, if you use base 6.

… is the basic film gauge (in millimeters) most commonly used for both analog photography and motion pictures.

… is the minimum age of candidates for election to the United States Presidency.

On this date in history 35 years ago

  • North Korea shot down a US helicopter, killing 3
  • US House established the permanent Select Committee on Intelligence
  • was the last day of the New York City blackout
  • Princess Victoria of Sweden was born
  • the #1 song in the US was Da Doo Ron Ron by Shaun Cassidy; it was So You Win Again by Hot Chocolate in the UK — the least said, the better
  • #1 on the New York Times book bestseller lists:
    • Fiction – The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough
    • Non-fiction – Your Erroneous Zones by David Wallechhinsky
  • playing in movie theaters:
    • The Spy Who Loved Me — was in limited release
    • The Rescuers
    • The Island of Dr. Moreau
    • MacArthur would open the next day
    • Star Wars — (way before it became tagged with an episode numeral) was still going strong, and would reclaim the #1 spot at the box office later this month
    • The Deepthe film for males my age that forever melded the white tee-shirt and Jacqueline Bisset into our hearts and minds, reclaimed the box office title this week (fourth weekend out from its initial release)
  • via my college’s job placement bulletin board, I began working at one particular health institution, and no one is more surprised than me that I’m still there.

What an interesting post, Michael! Thorn Birds was released 35 yrs ago?? I remember watching the miniseries, my mom loved those despite being a devout Catholic, ahah. Oh I still haven’t seen MacArthur yet, I remember Gregory telling a funny story about buying a house whilst still dressed/made up as the general, ahah. He said he was very assertive that day as he was still in character 🙂

Yeah, it’s hard to believe it was 35 years ago. You should check out ‘MacArthur’. While it’s not his greatest film, Gregory Peck brought his usual gravitas and accomplished talent to the bio (one that Universal hoped would be ‘Patton’-like). It wasn’t, but Peck remains the chief reason for seeing it. Thanks, Ruth.

I really wish I was a 10-20 year old when Star Wars opened and could experience it as others have but sadly I was born in 1979. Congrats on your job anniversary!!!
