Yes, It’s Another Oscar Prediction

Since others are doing this, I might as well add my 2¢ to all of the proceedings before the show starts. Those listed in blue are what I’d select for winners, and those in red are what I believe The Academy will chose. What would yours be?

Best Picture

  • Toy Story 3 (this was an easy choice for me)
  • The King’s Speech

Best Director

  • Darren Aronofsky, Black Swan (the edgier work that Oscar never seems to reward)
  • David Fincher, The Social Network

Best Actor

  • James Franco, 127 Hours (while I appreciate them both, Franco stood out for me)
  • Colin Firth, The King’s Speech

Best Actress

  • Natalie Portman, Black Swan (for me, it was Natalie or Jennifer Lawrence for this, and I went with the mad one)
  • Natalie Portman, Black Swan

Best Supporting Actor

  • John Hawkes, Winter’s Bone (Jennifer Lawrence and Hawkes really made this little seen film great, but this guy was extraordinary with less screen time)
  • Christian Bale, The Fighter

Best Supporting Actress

  • Hailee Steinfeld, True Grit (she’s in the wrong category, but she’s great nonetheless)
  • Melissa Leo, The Fighter

Best Original Screenplay

  • David Seidler, The King’s Speech
  • David Seidler, The King’s Speech

Best Adapted Screenplay

  • Aaron Sorkin, The Social Network (if The Academy picks anyone else for this, they are all on psychedelic mushrooms)

Best Documentary Film

  • Inside Job (let’s be clear, I would have picked the shamefully overlooked The Tillman Story here, but this will do)
  • Exit Through the Gift Shop

Best Animated Film

  • Toy Story 3 (if this is not a sure thing, the entire thing is a sham)

Best Cinematography

  • Roger Deakins, True Grit (this guy is long overdue, but this is still worthy to win)

Best Film Editing

  • Angus Wall and Kirk Baxter, The Social Network
  • Tariq Anwar, The King’s Speech

Best Visual Effects

  • Inception (there are others in this category?)

    Great choices, cousin! I’m not quite sure Leo is a lock to win Best Supporting Actress given her controversial Oscar campaign, but what can I say…

    Anyway, your personal picks are spot on, ‘though I still think you’ve got to see ANIMAL KINGDOM.

    Under the category- I really do not know very much at all ………
    Toy Story cannot win anything because I have never seen any of the 3 movies. My Niece said 3 was to dark and adult, so I know it should not win.

    Colin Firth can act, James Franco can smile.

    The Kings Speech is about an abused child trapped inside a Kings body, so sad. Should win most everything, probably won’t.

    Winters Bone ………… remember “In Living Color” HATED IT! Saw it on an airplane, thank god it was free. Depressing. Not why I go to the movies.

    True Grit minus JW = Great Movie. The girl carried the whole movie and the writing was the real star, my audience was engage, laughing out loud. Great remake but westerns. Best actress! Jeff and Matt showed their chops well.

    Please give Natalie an Oscar, she is great. Didn’t see Swan I just like her acting she is always good.

    Inception wins all the Herbies, my best every category movie of the year, great entertainment.

    That was fun!

    I think Toy Story 3 should win for Best Picture as well, but since it won’t, I like The Kings Speech. I saw Black Swan, well, I’ve seen crazy and this just wasn’t it. I didn’t think I’d like The Fighter, but it was great. I hope Melissa Leo wins despite her Oscar campaign. I have loved her since the Homicide: Life on the Street days. I guess we will all see in a few hours!

    We watched “Social Network” again the other night, and it hit me how important the editing was to the success of the movie. I’ll be really disappointed if Wall & Baxter don’t win. The really tough choice for me was Score – because I loved Hans Zimmer’s work in “Inception,” but also Reznor & Ross’ work on “Social Network.” I’m really looking forward to the show tonight because I liked all 7 of the 10 BP nominees that I saw. Usually there’s one I don’t like much, and then I end up having to root against something, which is never fun.

    We’re in agreement about how important Wall & Baxter’s editing was to The Social Network. I really liked so many of the films in this year’s nomination list, and that’s always a good thing. Thanks so much for your Oscar picks and your thoughts about the films. BTW, we watched/enjoyed Secretariat last night and I tweeted your post (on the film) last night. Thanks, Jeff.

    Frankly, I’d be pleased if True Grit if comes away with something. Westerns, and especially quality westerns are a rare commodity these days. When something this good comes along it deserves some recognition.

    We are in agreement with the films that will probably win. I think that INCEPTION will probably sweep the techie awards – it SHOULD win Visual Effects if there’s any justice. I’d love to see an upset in Original Screenplay category with Nolan winning that in lieu of not being nominated for Director but I doubt it.

    Here’s hoping Banksy shows up if his doc wins. The filmmaker who showed up at the Indie Spirit Awards delivered a very entertaining speech.

    I loved the title of your post. I’m tempted to do one.

    If not, I suspect it’s a big night for The King’s Speech and Black Swan. I’ve seen neither but my gut goes to Best Picture King’s Speech. Best Actor Colin Firth. Best Director Aronofsky. Best SupportinG Actor Christian Bale. Best Actress- Natalie Portman [though I’m not much of a fan at all]

        Hey my friend. We didn’t do too bad. It was an even bigger night for The King’s Speech than expected. But we got it mostly right. Best Director not a surprise, but we thought they might spread the happy. We should have known better. King’s Speech was the darling this year. It was kind of like Driving Miss Daisy or My Left Foot or something.
