Great post, Michael!! Thrilled that you’re joining the Super-festivities :D There are so many iconic things in Donner’s Superman, the performances, the song, right down to this opening sequence which remains awesome to this day. It’s incredible that it was ‘done entirely without computer graphics’ WOW! But yeah, the symbolism and the ‘S’ treatment is striking in its simplicity. I somehow just realized it only says SUPERMAN, not SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE. I guess we all know obviously we’re watching a movie, ahah.

Nice list. I have not seen EL Dorado or Rio Bravo (maybe I have … hmmm). Howard Hawks is ace!

My top five would be: His Girl Friday (for reasons), Ball of Fire, Bringing Up Baby (the screwiest of screwball comedies), The Thing and it’s a toss up between To Have and Have Not and The Big Sleep.

Oooh, keen observation about ‘Argo’s opening titles. That one was splendidly done. Concise real history with great titles. I agree with you about its heritage, Paula. Great comment. Many thanks.

p.s., those comments in the margin, referred to as sidenotes by the developer, are purely a function of the Watson theme I converted to this year. It’s a great type/writing feature that helped me select this particular premium theme.

Oh, yes. As soon as you go beyond the work of Richard Donner, the drop is precipitous. On Thursday’s post, I’ll include a link to an article a friend wrote discussing why Bryan Singer’s ‘Superman Returns’ delivered such mixed results.

The irony here, “Superman is hard to do well…”, is that the live-action films certainly fit that observation. Most, if not all, of DC’s Superman animation movies, on the other hand, are very good. But, each does their films from completely different perspectives and motives.

I really hope ‘Man of Steel’ pays off. A number of fans are pulling for it, that’s for sure. Thanks, mummbles :-).
